I thought it would be interesting to hear some discussion about the election in Germany and what opinions people have of the candidates. I'm also adding a link to an article about the election, as our German readers may find it interesting to read about how newssources in other countries are discussing their election: http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/09/2 ... meier.html

And just to add - I believe I read somewhere that Merkel has a PhD (Physics, I think?) - so she sure as heck should be referred to as "Doctor" and NOT simply "Missus", as was noted in this article. If she were a man with a PhD, I'm pretty sure she would NEVER just be referred to as "Mister". Just my comments...

@ PuNky: Do you know the % of eligible voter turnout? I was wondering about this earlier today.

And of course, now that we know the results, I'm sure it's fine to address Merkel as "Chancellor" (as opposed to "Missus" or "Doctor"), right?.

This story is popping up on American news pages

German minister-to-be rebuffs question in English

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090928/od_ ... nglish_odd

I am not sure why this is making news. I agree with the minister to be. You're in Germany, asking a question to a GERMAN. If you do not speak German, than have a translator to ask. It is rude and presumptuous to ask a question in not the native tongue in my opinion.

Very true. All I can say is good for her! It saddens me that in the US we have not had a female leader, nor will see one in the near future I fear.

^ Interesting! This language thing seems to be getting too much attention...after all, English is NOT the official language of Germany, is it?

Re: Female leader: So very, very true. We *had* a female leader - once - and for a very short time, she got in basically by "default". Sadly, there still aren't enough women in the REAL "power" positions in politics.

^ Thank you! I clicked the link to Merkel, and found out that she had also been referred to as the "Iron Girl" (something similar to Thatcher). Again, I'll make this point...if she were a man, no one would refer to her as an "Iron BOY", would they? How bloody disrespectful and sexist.

^No she would not be Iron Boy if she were a man, they get a non-gender name like the Iron Fist, or something like that.

^ Oh, yes, of course! And even if she *would* be referred to as (for example) "Iron Fist", you can bet the media, her opponents, etc. would also call her femininity into question. Actually, that's already happened (in that well endowed "law student's" little song for Merkel's opponent, Steinmeier) - Merkel was referred to as being "too masculine." Is it considered "too masculine" to be the leader of a country? Should Merkel learn to giggle and bat her eyelashes to satisfy the likes of her and others that she is really female/woman/"feminine"?
