I read this article with a mixture of incredulity and revulsion. I still can't quite believe it: http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/episode/20 ... biaplasty/

I've heard of it before, several times and knew it was something actually pretty common. It doesn't really bother me that it exists, I think all kinds of plastic surgery should be available to people for whatever reason. I wouldn't compare it to mutilation, as it doesn't have the same purpose or reason and isn't nearly as brutal and extreme. I know a lot of people find all plastic surgery unnatural, but if it makes people happier or more comfortable, they are free to do it if that is what they want. Just my opinion.

Though one thing that disturbed me in that article was that they mention 12 year old girls wanting this. What? Your body is not finished at that age, and you are often a lot more insecure about yourself than you really should be. And also, you shouldn't be showing that part of yourself at that age anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. Any plastic surgery at such a young age should only be necessary if something is actually wrong, or something has happened, like and accident/injury. You shouldn't have to worry about intimate surgery just to look okay down there when you're 12. Then I think doctors, parents, councellors should be offering another kind of help/support.

I am very torn on this. On the one hand, I believe people should have the right to do whatever they want to their bodies - and it is definitely true that some women may have, say, a labia that is large enough to cause them discomfort when doing certain activities (such as riding a bike, as was mentioned in the article) or even just when walking. If I had that problem I would definitely want to have surgery. On the other hand, I can't help feeling that a lot of the purely cosmetic surgery (i.e. not because someone is experiencing discomfort or pain) is happening because of insecurities caused by things like porn setting an almost impossible standard of what a woman's bits 'should' look like, whereas before this would never have been an issue. It makes me feel very sad that women might think their natural bodies are ugly because they don't look like the bodies in porn.

I'm not sure what we do to 'solve' the issue of porn and misogyny in porn - I don't object to pornography in theory, but in practise a lot of it can be very misogynist. Then again, a lot of society is very misogynist, and I am not sure that porn is causing this misogyny, rather than just reflecting the desires of a misogynist society.

I personally think that cosmetic surgery should be restricted to those who needed it and not just wanted it for the sake of trying to look like Jordan. If there's an underlying reason such as you wanted to change something because you hated the way it looked, I can understand that, as I'd love to have a straight and problem-free nose. As for "down there" surgery, do I want it? Not when there are millions of women worldwide who are getting mutilated down there without their consent, as they don't get a say in the matter, and they are often left in need of serious medical help.

The whole thing makes me cringe after I watched a doco about it - it was the graphic surgical scenes that had me crossing my legs. Ouch. Just Ouch.

One thing that stood out to me was where young women (Under 20 yo) who were getting 'trimmed up' because their boyfriends didn't like the way things looked..... Wow. Just Wow. Where does it stop? I don't like your ear lobes, chop them off too!

I agree with K about getting things altered for a medical reason, eg discomfort etc, sure.

But if it's being done for aesthetic reasons - Well..... as someone who's had 9lb babies I'd thoroughly recommend any rearranging be done AFTER delivery, because there's no point in undoing all the surgeons work with a bowling ball sized head! :rolling:

Its ok if it improves quality of life for some people and is a necessity, but other than that its just weird and shows just how distorted our image of beauty is. And plus the 12 yr old girls that want it...where are their parents!?!?!
The human body is intended to be the way it is why cant people just leave it alone! Getting it done for the sake of some stupid guys is even more stupid i cant believe people like that actually exist...they would disfigure their body for someone else who probably doesn't even care about them, and if they did, why would they tell them to do such a thing?

i read an interesting article about this recently, actually. the author mentioned the fact that, as we can now see hundreds of vaginas with a click of a mouse, we are more inclined to compare ourselves to others than ever before (and many of the people we compare ourselves to have had this kind of surgery).

i personally think people should modify their bodies in any way that they choose, but i question the reasons that some of us have for doing so. i am guilty of being self-conscious about aspects of my appearance, but i don't recall that being the case before i was relentlessly bombarded by images of how i 'should' be. as much as i would like to change myself sometimes, i always question the reasons why. it feels like some sort of disease has infested my brain.

there is an unnatural picture of the female body that is coagulating in our collective minds thanks to porn, and i'm not sure that this is healthy. i worked in a porn shop for many years, and i have personally taken note that there is a certain uniformity of the genitals that doesn't really jive with reality.

i am conflicted. i am pro body modification and self-expression, but i am saddened by the forces that shape our views of ourselves.
