Tonight the 3rd and final debate on the Marriage equality bill is being read and HOPEFULLY passed here in NZ - If it passes then Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and bisexual couple will be able to be married and will be a legal couple in the eyes of the law.

This is really exciting, I feel like I'm watching history being made in real time on the parliament TV channel. :bounce:

I'm passionately FOR gay marriage - it's about equality, it's about human rights, it's about the LIFAD principle and it's about good old fashioned love.

So what are your thoughts?

Gay Marriage, yay or nay?

and it just passed!!

77 votes for, 44 against.

It's now legal for LGBT couples to marry in New Zealand! :bounce:

Genuinely proud to be a Kiwi tonight

(and guess what, it hasn't affected my marriage to my husband in the slightest! :rolling: )

We're getting there, but it's not legal here in the UK yet. I really hope they do leagalise it here though.
My cousin had her Civil Ceremony a few months ago. I couldn't have been happier for her, but it SHOULD have been her WEDDING. Love is LOVE no matter the gender & should be recognised as such!

Congrats New Zealand! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I agree with smog, UK needs to sort it out. It's good that we have civil unions but by this stage, it's slightly embarrassing we still haven't changed it to proper marriage.

We've had civil unions for a couple of years too, but I see that as a watered down version of marriage - why can hetero couples have a civil union OR a marrige, but same sex couples have no choice.

I actually spent a LONG time last night trying to sanely and reasonably put my point across on another forum (a PARENTING forum no less) and man, the hatred coming out of some of those bigots has astounded me. Pretty sad that they're raising kids actually. :headwall:

I lot of them just couldn't understand how I could support it as a hetero girl happily married to a guy.

They all seem to think that this will some how destroy their own marriges :rolling:

It shouldn't be an issue in 2013 should it?

I saw this earlier today on Facebook. Congrats, New Zealand! <3

Now, I can only hope that the US will follow those same lines...

^CBM... I can somehow see religious sects trying to get in on the action and going against the law by doing not-so-nice things to gay members and/or saying that they're doomed to go to whatever version of hell according to said religion. That said, marriage is not about who you marry, but who you love, and if you love someone, it doesn't matter what they are on the outside as far as gender is concerned, as you should be able to marry them without problems, and in saying that, I'm female, yet I would happily marry someone who was transgender (transfemale or transgender), and if the gay marriage bill gets put back and put forward when we have a suitable prime minister running the country, I will make my vote but until then I'm afraid to say it should not go ahead (we recently had to fork out £10m for a funeral which I think is nuts)

Congrats :champagne:
We have it since 2001. So normal that in fact you stop realizing , it's not like that everywhere.
It's remarkable in a time where more and more people choose to live together in a relation with or without kids, without marriage.I'm married, that was the easiest way back then to get all the legal stuff in order. But now living together or marriage gives you exactly the same rights and obligations. It's not that I'm unhappy in my marriage or that I want out, I just don't see the extra worth of a signature from city hall by someoneone I never met and never will see again.
All that put aside I think all people that intend to spend their lives together should be free to choose in which formula .

Has anyone else watched Maurice Williamson's speech on the gay marriage bill? Nice to hear a politician talking sense (with a good sense of humour as well!) :)

Rhode Island's Judiciary Committee has voted 7-4 in favor of marriage equality legislation! :D It's now going to the state senate for the full vote. Fingers crossed for them.

Go Rhode Island!

I LOVE the Maurice Williamson speech, I cracked up when he described how long he'd actually last burning in hell :rolling: :rolling:

He's a bit stunned at the reception it's had too actually, he's suddenly sound himself to be a 'gay icon' even though he's married (to a woman) with kids!

He's gonna be on the Ellen show apparently, good on him :)
