@ AL: I think it was you who recommended The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? I saw it at my library and picked it up. Haven't watched it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. :)

Last really good movie I saw was Everything is Illuminated.

I found out about this film because Eugene Hütz, the singer of Gogol Bordello, is the narrator and plays one of the main characters. The band you see in the train station scene is actually the rest of Gogol Bordello. I don't usually watch a film just because someone I like is in it, but I looked it up and it seemed like the kind of film I would like.

The film is based on a true story. Elijah Wood plays a young jewish man who collects family things and he travels to Ukraine to find a woman who made his granfather go to America and thereby saved his life during WW2. He wants to know what relationship they had and what happened to her. When he comes to Ukraine he gets help from a interpretor (Eugene Hütz) who isn't really that good at English and the grandfather of this guy. He is going to be their driver. None of them really like jews and they have a mentally deranged dog with them in the car. Then they argue in the car while on their way to find a village that was basically wiped off the map by the nazis. Both Elijah and the interpretor find out things about their families along the way.
The film starts as a comedy, then becomes more serious and eventually pretty sad and a bit unpleasant. I almost had this feeling of anxiety in my chest afterwards, but that's probably just personal reasons. You see some memories and flashbacks to WW2, not really showing much but it is clear what is going on and it is a sad and cruel background story. For the longest time you also don't really know if one of the characters was a bad guy or not. It's a really good film, but it sure reminded me of why I was ashamed of being German for a long time...

The music gave some scenes a sad, creepy, beautiful feeling too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M1mxq83btY

One thing that bothered me a little bit about the film is that without his famous handlebar moustache, Eugene Hütz looks like Joe Letz (Combichrist). I had to remind myself a few times that it isn't Joe. :rolling:

I'll have to keep an eye open for that movie at my library. I'd love to see it. :)

Last night, I saw "Man of Steel." I quite liked it. :D

Also, I just finished watching "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." It was a bit slow in some places, but I generally enjoyed it. I can't say the same for my parents, though...

I've watched a few good ones in the past few weeks. Dallas Buyers Club (loved it!), Gravity (not a sad movie, but I did get a bit teary eyed several times), Don Jon (wasn't sure if I would like it or not. I really liked the ending) & I've been re watching all the Hannibal Lector movies (Hannibal Rising being my favorite as I am fascinated by "nuttiness" & its causes).
